Labour Convention 2006 was adopted by the 94th International Labour
Conference at a maritime session in Geneva in February 2006.
comprehensive rights and protection at work for the world's 1.2
million plus seafarers.
MLC sets out
the right of seafarers to decent conditions of work on a wide range
of subjects, and aims to be globally applicable, easily
understandable, readily updatable and uniformly enforced.
To come into force, the MLC had to
be ratified by at least 30 member states, with a total share in the
world gross tonnage of ships of 33 per cent. This milestone was
reached on August 20, 2012. The MLC therefore comes into force on
August 20, 2013.
